Television Draws Quebec to Christ

Television Draws Quebec to Christ

Have you ever considered how the programs we watch on television influence our thoughts and emotions? The narratives that weave a story, the images that paint a perspective — every frame leaves a mark in our minds, often affecting us more than we realize.

While television can feed into negative narratives that shape individual and collective beliefs, it also has the power to inspire change and turn skeptics into seekers.

Could televsion be more than just entertainment? Could it connect us to explore the deeper questions we all face?

In Quebec, where only one percent of the population identifies as evangelical Christian, there’s a widely felt, shared longing for something deeper. Amid the noise of chaos and confusion, many across the province are searching for answers to their spiritual questions and feelings of uncertainty. Television offers a great engagement opportunity.

Recently, TWR Canada’s ministry partner in Quebec, Aujourd’hui l’Espoir, received an inspiring testimony from a viewer named Emma. She reached out, eager to learn more about Christianity. The website form asked her to fill out two questions: “How did you hear about us?” and “What attracts you to this literature?” Her response highlights how God providentially works through television to prompt profound discovery:

“One morning, my 11-year-old daughter turned on the television while I was drinking an early morning coffee.

“I never watch television in the morning.

“Personally, I’m saturated with it all; I find it a desolation that seeps in like a sandstorm. You have to be strong yet agile and flexible when watching television.

“Your show came on and before turning it off, to my great surprise, I listened to it with my husband. Strangely enough, he didn’t even flinch. I’d never heard of this show before. I was intrigued because I could see two humans conversing, with a calm and instructive exchange, whereas society is the opposite – hurried and hectic, and healthy communication seems impossible.

“La Parole Vivante explained verses, emotions and parallels in our lives. When I saw your ad for the book, I felt challenged. I thought: ‘Huh, this book explains these concepts in better detail. What’s more, they’re offering it to us — it sounds too good!’

“I looked at your website and it intrigued and challenged me even more. I felt compelled because it was within my grasp, and here’s the text that convinced me: ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and receive my instructions, for I am gentle and humble of heart, and you will find rest for your souls.’ This text seems so perfect to me. It drew me in.”

In a world where television often perpetuates chaos and confusion, it’s important to remember that it can also be a powerful tool for transformation lives. Just like Emma, many people in Quebec are quietly searching for meaning and peace amid the noise in their worlds.
