Radio Remains Relevant

Radio Remains Relevant

With the rise of music streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, some people think traditional radio is on its way out. But could it be that radio remains the most relevant and effective way for reaching a country like Sri Lanka, where the majority of the population are not Christians? Read how God is transforming lives through radio in Sri Lanka.

For TWR Canada, radio broadcasting has been and continues to be the cornerstone of our outreach and discipleship ministries.

In the Western world, we may think radio is not as relevant or that people aren’t making use of it anymore with more convenient technology like Apple Music and Spotify available. However, in parts of the world like Sri Lanka, radio offers a pivotal means for people to learn about Christ and tune into the transformational power of understanding God’s Word.

The Sinhalese program God’s Unique Book is beloved across the small but mighty island of Sri Lanka. Each broadcast is created by the team on the ground in response to current events and listener inquiries, making the weekly topics incredibly relevant and uplifting to listeners.

Scripture reminds us that even though we have heard the good news, we need to regularly assess and strengthen our relationship with Jesus (Hebrews 2:1). We are instructed to not only hear this message but to pay close attention and to continue learning from this message. This is why radio home groups offer a unique opportunity to share the gospel through a radio broadcast and deepen spiritual connection and community.

Radio home groups are comprised of believers who gather and listen to audio programming and discuss what they have learned, leading to a collective multiplication of faith. Where there are many people who are illiterate, underprivileged and lacking access to electricity, the group setting discussion serves to uplift, evangelize and disciple individuals and their communities.

Since 2023, TWR Canada has partnered with TWR Lanka to distribute 1,500 players into the country, with plans to send out more in 2025.

One radio home group member in Sri Lanka recently shared, “We had a variety of difficulties in our house, and I had no idea how to tackle them. I received this radio. We all gathered and listened to these lessons in the evening. God unexpectedly gave us peace in our home. I praise God for the blessing he bestowed to our family.”

Another member in Sri Lanka shared, “The Christians in our church had the opportunity to learn God's Word through this radio, as well as read the Bible. We have two poor folks who are blind, and this radio was necessary for them. I am extremely satisfied with this service.”

Although times have changed and TWR Canada is effectively utilizing various new forms of media to share the Christian message and disciple believers, radio continues to be a very relevant and powerful tool for proclaiming Christ to the nations and helping everyone everywhere find and follow Jesus in a language they understand.
