Reliable power is a luxury in Cuba, where frequent outages intensify the island’s already complex economic and social challenges. During these times, churches have become sanctuaries of hope and support, filled with people searching for the Lord. Alberto, RTM Cuba ministry leader, has lived in Cuba his entire life. From enduring work camps as a punishment for being a seminary student in the 1960s to facing the country’s current hardships, his experiences give him deep empathy for those struggling in Cuba today.

Now in his 80s, Alberto is mentoring a successor, Moisés, to lead the Cuban ministry. This includes recording the programs Messages of Faith and Hope and Our Home and following up with listeners. Broadcast daily from TWR’s Bonaire station, these programs are free from political agendas and provide encouragement and spiritual guidance to Cubans.

Recently, TWR sent Alberto 100 solar-powered radios to distribute across Cuba. What’s great about these radios is that they don’t require batteries or electricity to power them. With frequent power outages disrupting traditional media, these radios not only connect Cubans with God’s Word, but keep them informed about local and global developments, helping them stay connected and maintain a sense of normalcy and consistency.

These radios also foster community and resilience, especially for long-time listeners who can’t afford to replace an old, broken radio, as well as comfort and entertainment. In a country facing economic hardship and power issues, having access to music, storytelling and cultural programs can relieve stress and strengthen social bonds. Cubans can stay connected to their cultural heritage, share experiences and ultimately experience a spiritual connection to Christ, despite the difficulties they face.

Alberto shared, “Receiving these radios has been incredibly emotional for us and our listeners. For years, it has been impossible to buy radios locally. Many of our listeners have outdated radios that no longer work. Receiving solar radios feels like a miracle and a real blessing.”

As economic conditions in Cuba seem to worsen, solar-powered radios provide meaningful information and connections. Thanks to your prayers and support, we can connect Cubans to Christ through radio! Please pray that these radios will bring hope and transformation to those in need, amplifying the message of hope they carry. Pray also for Alberto who continues to await his travel permit to join his family in the United States.
