The Winter is Past, the Rain is Over and Gone
The Winter is Past, the Rain is Over and Gone
“My beloved speaks and says to me, ‘Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away, for behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.” (Song of Solomon 2:10-12)
The Song of Solomon depicts a bride and groom expressing their love for one another in a poem. This book of the Bible is interpreted in more than one way but is often seen as pointing to Christ’s love for his bride, the Church.
The bride here speaks of how her groom calls to her to bring her out of the dreariness of winter and rain. Spring is here! Flowers are growing! Something new and beautiful and refreshing has come! In a similar way, Christ calls to his bride and pursues her. He does away with the old and makes all things new and beautiful. He brings his bride out of the darkness and renews and restores her. He dresses her in pure garments and brings new life to her. This is true for the Church as a whole and for individuals within the church.
After the winter, the rain, and the dreariness, he gives new life and calls each of us to walk with him in this new life! Bit by bit, day by day, he sanctifies his bride. There is a new spring and new restoration for her every morning!
Our beloved is calling us to come out of the winter and into the new life of spring! Let's walk with him in the beauty of this new life!
