“Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who has brought you out from under the Egyptians.’” (Exodus 6:6-7)
Throughout Israel’s history, God used their story to paint a picture of his faithfulness and redeeming love. God showed his plan for redemption in many ways and to many individuals, such as Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and more, but now he was demonstrating that redemption on a much wider scale.
The people of Israel had been suffering under harsh slavery for a long time and God had heard their cries. God was again going to reveal himself as a faithful, loving Redeemer and this time in a way that had never been seen before. He would send judgment on his enemies, prosper his people, and make a way where there was no way for them to be delivered!
The wondrous might of God had been seen before on a mostly individual basis but now the magnitude of his might was being seen by the entirety of his covenant people and by their enemies. Even with the greatness of this deliverance and redemption, this was only a glimpse of the redemption to come. That redemption was for one nation, the one Christ brings is for every nation. That redemption was specific to the descendants of Abraham, the one Christ brings is for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord.
Let us rejoice in the massive, unheard-of, never-before-seen redemption of God!
