Circumstantial Weariness
Circumstantial Weariness
“I am weary with crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God.” (Psalm 69:3)
The Bible doesn’t contain any promises that we won’t ever be hurt or that life will be free of suffering or that we will always get exactly what we want when we want it, but there is the promise that God will never leave or forsake us (Heb. 13:5).
We may cry and cry and cry some more. Our throats may ache from calling out and hearing no answer. Our eyes may grow dim, blinded by tears and still not seeing the reason why. We may wait for a long time before we understand what all the suffering was for. Even then, God will not forsake us. Even then, Jesus says, “Come to me” and “I will give you rest.”
Whether it is sickness, loss, or even feeling burnt out from being overloaded with good things, Jesus knows and understands our circumstances and the ways that we think and feel about them. But when we are weak, he is strong. When we feel hopeless, he is our undying hope. When we are sorrowful, he is our compassionate comforter who will ultimately strengthen us with his joy.
One day we will no longer have any reason for sadness. We will no longer need to wait, for we will see Christ face to face. But in the meantime, while we wait, we can come to Jesus and he will give us rest for our souls.
